Mustacchio Caffe is the newest eatery on the block – Kloof street block that is. Situated where Kloof and Long street meet, this space is the perfect fusion of trendy cuisine paired with a vibey atmosphere to compliment its location.
Perhaps if you are privy to the languages of all things good taste – would you know that with a name like “Mustacchio”, you’d be stepping into an Italian eatery. If not, and you, like me, were captivated by the shop’s edgy juxtaposing decor and dare I say it – instagrammabilty, you’d be pleasantly surprised that you’re in for a modern take on great Italian cuisine in a truly intriguing space.
The personal details make the experience all more engaging. Guest are served chilled water in Mustacchio branded bottles, while they have an opportunity to go through the collegiate-esque menus on clipboards, or opt to build a burger with notepad and pencil at hand. Ride or die burger lovers might find themselves opting for the waffle burger in an effort to discover what this restaurant is really capable of.
In an attempt to taste a bit of everything while also admittedly doing it for the ‘gram, we ordered smoked mozzarella and bacon skewers, crispy ciabatta bread with garlic and olive oil, a specialty Roman dish called Suppli which is essentially a deep fried rice ball in bolognese sause with a melted mozazella filling and of course – a side of parmesan fries.
I must say that the skewers were exceptionally delicious as I really enjoyed the smoky flavour combinations, and while the girls I was dining with didn’t quite understand the deep-fried rice ball, I was know stranger to this dish as I had it during my visit to Italy and must say that this one was perfectly prepared. We ended our visit on a sweet note with dessert in the form of an orange tiramisu which not only looked impressive presented in an artsy jar but was also bursting with flavour.
If you’re looking for a spot that will excite you with new takes on traditional dishes in a setting that boasts both a casual yet fresh aesthetic, perhaps talk a walk up Kloof street and pop in at shop no 1. and give this Italian gem a hearty Captonian welcome.
