After a day of tempting my unbounded wanderlust on the streets of Kalk Bay and the greater False Bay area as part of the Explore the Cape series, we took a much needed pitstop – or in this case coffee-stop before heading back home. What better place to refuel than the ultra trendy cafe and restaurant positioned so perfectly on the vibrant main road of Kalk Bay, with a name that would make any South African’s mouth water and swiftly educate tourists as to why. No matter where you’re from, as soon as you step foot inside Lekker Kalk Bay, you’ll understand what this local eatery is all about.
Apart from the unbeatable location in the heart of Kalk Bay and on the popular main road just metres from the ocean, Lekker Kalk Bay has a vibrant atmosphere that puts guests at ease while still maintaining a certain energetic aspect carried throughout the establishment by the clean and modern interior. The restaurant’s design is trendy and youthful, with the menu rendered onto a chalk-board-feature-wall. The space is fitted with shelves full of interesting goodies and quirky furnishings. The indoor-outdoor flow makes it easy for guest to enjoy the Southern sun while still feeling very much apart of the main area as local beats seamlessly bring these spaces together.
As if the decor were not already enough of a delectable feast for the eyes, Lekker Kalk Bay serves up a host of local dishes with a twist, and a variety of speciality beverages to complement the food. Being on a mission to taste some of the best coffees in Cape Town (and in days prior to this sit-down, having tasted coffees from the Southern Karoo, Elgin, and Kenya); I must say that regardless of what type of caffeine your looking for – be sure to order it here! My sentiments, or those of my tastebuds, were echoed by Kris, my masterful coffee-tasting partner in crime, and trust me, if it impresses this discerning German – its good!
Coffees aside, the the eatery boasts a wide variety of fresh baked goods that would make anyone with a sweet tooth swoon. There is also an abundance of unique little treats and trinkets to indulge in, onsite or take away.
One thing I must point out is that it is very rare to find an establishment that ticks all the boxes when it comes to location, atmosphere, food quality and service. With my final point of highlighting the warm disposition and friendly service of the restaurant’s staff, I can surely tick a box that too often left empty.
Similarly to the False Bay area, this is certainly a restaurant worth a visit. For those looking to adventure even further towards the Southern most point of Africa, Lekker Simons Town will service you along the way as you pass through this breathtaking area.
