Laduma Ngxokolo is the creative mastermind behind up and coming knitwear brand, MaXhosa. He aims to incorporate his own Xhosa culture in his designs, truly capturing the essence of his rich African heritage.
Growing up in Port Elizabeth, Laduma’s mother was the one who introduced him to the world of knitwear. She was the one who taught him the skills he still uses today in creating his one of a kind patterned pieces. Laduma then went on to attend the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, where he in 2010 graduated with a BTech degree in textile design and technology. Upon his graduation Laduma entered “The Society of Dyers and Colourist” competition – and landed first place! It was this recognition that afforded him the opportunity to take part in the well-known “Design Indaba” held annually at Cape Town International Convention Centre. The overwhelming positive press coverage was what allowed Laduma to officially establish his brand in February 2011.
Laduma has taken his brand from strength to strength , in August 2014 he took part in the Oslo trend exhibition, a trip sponsored by the Cape Town Fashion Council, and has since showcases in some of the world’s top fashion destinations including New York, Paris, London and Berlin. There are no signs of slowing down for this young designer, as he has most recently branched out into incorporating home wear, such as patterned cushions, rugs and blankets into his brand – and with such thriving growth and success, the local and international fashion industry can expect great things from MaXhosa – and of course his South African supporters shouting “Laduma!” all the way!
